The World Health Organization (WHO) successfully protected a laboratory in the Congolese city of Goma from a potential virus leak, declared the organization’s representative in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Boureima Hama Sambo.
On January 28, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warned about the risk of virus leakage from the Goma laboratory due to power outages.
“We managed to bring fuel to this laboratory, and the facilities containing strains of the Ebola, Marburg, monkeypox, and COVID-19 viruses automatically shut down. Currently, there is no risk of leakage associated with this laboratory, it is safe,” he said at a press conference in Geneva.
In the east of the DRC, numerous rebel and guerrilla groups operate, including the March 23 Movement (M23), which fights for the interests of the Tutsi ethnic minority.
Fighting in this area has resulted in at least 773 deaths and 2,880 injuries as of January 30, according to the Congolese government.
On February 6, the Director General of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC Africa), Jean Kaseya, warned that the fighting in the east of the DRC threatens uncontrolled epidemics.
